Summer Reading Program

Toddlers learn to talk, and preschoolers learn to communicate. From learning the sounds that make up words to figuring out what words on a page mean, this is an important phase of a child’s life. During the summer months, when families have the most leisure time of the year and relax a little more, we want to encourage children to learn in a fun, relaxing, and explorative way. That is why Small Wonders introduced the summer reading program. Children and families are working together, choosing books, reading independently, discussing and writing or dictating their stories, and then keeping a record, or chart, of their reading time. Encouraged to share their favorite stories, writing and drawings with peers and the child care team, the celebration of summer reading is acknowledged at the annual end-of-summer celebration and graduation.
